At three lakhs and above you are no longer buying a sofa, you are commissioning one. That changes what the quote should contain. Here is the checklist we would use if we were the ones buying.
The frame
- Wood, named. “Hardwood” is not a wood. Teak, sheesham or rosewood — and whether it is solid throughout or solid on the visible faces only.
- Seasoning. How long, and kiln-dried or air-dried. Unseasoned wood warps, and you will not find out for a year.
- Joinery. Mortise-and-tenon or dowelled. Screwed-and-glued butt joints do not belong on a sofa at this price.
The seating
- Foam density. This should be a number. 32-density is soft and will sag within a few years of daily use; 40-density is the standard for good seating. The quote should say which.
- Seat base. Pocket springs, zig-zag springs, or nylon webbing. All three are valid; the quote should name one.
- Back cushions. Foam, fibre, or feather-blend — they feel and age completely differently.
The upholstery
- Fabric name and composition. Velvet, chenille, linen, leather — and whether the leather is full-grain, top-grain or bonded. Bonded leather is not leather in any meaningful sense and peels within a few years.
- Rub count. Fabric durability is measured in rubs. Anything under 20,000 is not suited to a main sofa.
- Are covers removable? This decides whether the sofa can be cleaned or only surface-wiped.
The finish
- Polish type — melamine, PU, lacquer or traditional. And whether gold or silver work is genuine leaf, paint, or foil.
- Touch-up policy. Polish gets scuffed in transit. Ask who fixes it and whether it is chargeable.
The measurements
Overall width, depth and height for every piece, plus seat height and seat depth. Seat height decides whether the sofa is comfortable for older family members; anything below 42 cm becomes hard to get out of.
Also confirm the piece will physically reach the room. Measure your lift, your staircase turn and your narrowest doorway before you order, not after.
The timeline and the money
- Production time in weeks, in writing.
- Payment split — how much advance, when the balance is due.
- What happens if it is late. Ask. The answer tells you a lot.
Delivery, installation and after
- Is delivery included, and to which floor? “Ground floor delivery” on a 200 kg set is a meaningful exclusion.
- Who assembles and places it — the maker’s own team or a transport contractor?
- Warranty, split between frame and upholstery, with the exclusions written out.
The paperwork
A GST invoice in the seller’s registered business name. Not a quotation, not a WhatsApp message — a proper invoice with a GSTIN on it. Without that you have no warranty you can enforce and no record if something goes wrong.
The short version
A good quote at this price is a page long and boring, because it names everything. If a quote for a four-lakh sofa fits in two lines, the missing detail is not a formality — it is the part you will argue about later.
